On November 8, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda), one of the strongest typhoons ever to make landfall, cut a path of destruction across the central Philippines, killing more than 6,000 people and displacing approximately four million.
Haiyan severely damaged or destroyed over 1.1 million houses and these areas were some of the poorest and most vulnerable areas of the country even before the typhoon hit.
In part of relief from this devastation the W. J. Clinton Elementary Green Club held a food can drive to provide some assistance to the communities in these islands. Student’s contributed by bringing in a can food as their entrance to a campus dance. Food cans were collected and sent out to the Philippines not knowing if the food would get there in time to provide relief. Finally, this past weekend, the citizens of Daanbantayan, Cebu, Phillippines were able to contact Clinton Elementary to thank our students for their kind gesture, from 13,809 kilometers away. That is more than 8.5 thousand miles. This gesture reaffirms the Green Clubs resolve to continue to being good citizens of the world.
