First Grade Share Electronic Portfolios at Clinton STEM Elementary

Students at W. J. Clinton STEM Elementary are integrating technology into their everyday classroom activities. Students are not only engaged in their activities, but they are taking control over their own learning. Effective integration of technology is achieved when students are able to select technology tools to help them obtain information, analyze the information, and present it professionally. Technology in our school is being implemented through various activities such as recording and uploading their work to their Class Dojo portfolios. In this article, two of Mrs. Aldape’s first grade students are recording each other and uploading their writing of the week “Fairytale” to their personal Class Dojo portfolio. Since Mrs. Aldape introduced the Class Dojo portfolios to her students, they are more excited and motivated to finish their work so that they can upload it to their portfolios. The Class Dojo portfolios have also helped to enhance communication with parents because parents are able to see the work that their child is producing in class.qr code

Clinton STEM Elementary Zooms Around the World

On Wednesday, October 18th, Ms. Cano’s 4th grade class participated in a mystery video conference call.  Mrs. N. Garza, librarian at Clinton Elementary connected with Jamie Nelson a librarian in Nebraska and they coordinated a video conference call in which each class asked each other questions in order to figure out the location from which the broadcast was happening.  Questions such as, does your state border Canada? Does your state border Mexico? Are you east of the Mississippi River?, allowed students to eliminate states and narrow the location as they navigated through US maps.  Mrs. Cano’s 4th grade class was very excited to participate in this call because they were able to meet students from across the nation. zooming

Clinton STEM Elementary Remembers Their Loved Ones

The Day of the Dead, Día de los Muertos, is a Mexican holiday in which families remember and honor their deceased loved ones.  This is a very festive and colorful holiday that celebrates the lives of those who have passed on. Clinton families worked together to create shoebox altars.  Parents and students decorated shoeboxes with flowers, food, candles, calaveras, papel picado and pictures of the loved ones that passed. The shoebox altars were displayed creating a large altar for everyone to see.

Captain Crab

Clinton Elementary Welcomes Captain Crab

Clinton Elementary students and staff know the importance of preserving the natural beauty and environment of the place they call home, the Rio Grande Valley.  Furthermore, one of the initiatives as a STEM campus is to continue the awareness of recycling in order to preserve the habitats of the many species native to the Rio Grande Valley region.  That is why the Green Club’s motto throughout the year is:  “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.”  Captain Crab, one of Clinton Elementary favorite visitor shares such motto.  As part of the Green Club’s awareness campaign, Captain Crab and his compadres paid Clinton Elementary a visit to promote the initiatives of beach clean-ups and the importance of the three R’s (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle).  Students were able to enjoy a puppet show where the message of maintaining our beaches clean rang loud and clear.  Staff was also able to join in on the fun as they participated in small competition relays.  At the end of the show, students joined in singing Captain Crab’s famous song of “Put the trash in the can man” which message will be shared throughout the community.
